2021 Spinifex Adelaide Hills Chardonnay

Description: 

Vintage: The 2021 growing season and vintage conditions were close to historical averages. Solid winter and spring rains were a great start to the season but uneven weather throughout spring negatively affected flowering in some areas. The weather approaching and during harvest was generally mild, dry, and without tribulation.   Fruit was harvested in good condition and yields were moderate delivering wine were variable but generally close to average, with wines showing lovely balance, flavour depth and freshness.

Vineyard: Chardonnay has always been among our favourites at the table.  Deeply flavoured, complex, textural, full yet fresh – they can be very engaging and satisfying wines, and the Adelaide Hills is a great source of such wines.  We’ve been working with a couple of Hills vineyards over the 3 years and the ’21 is the first release made from fruit wholly from the Morialta Vineyard in Norton Summit located on the western edge of Adelaide Hills. It’s a lovely block – around 20 years of age, north-east facing, north-south rows. It is thoughtfully managed by a grower with a deep enthusiasm and drive to see the best possible quality fruit grown in his vineyard – he’s a pleasure to work with.  Everything is done by hand – pruned, thinned and picked.  Yields are naturally low.

Vinification: Fruit was hand harvested in the cool of the morning and then chilled overnight prior to full destemming and crushing the following day.   The must was left to macerate for 4 hours prior to gentle pressing.  Around 50% of the juice was transferred directly to barrel ex-press, the balance roughly settled for 18 hrs before being filled to wood. Fermentation was undertaken by indigenous yeasts entirely in wood, around 70% new. Fermentation progressed at ambient temperatures and lasted 10 days and was followed by partial malo-lactic fermentation. The young wine spent the next 9 months on full yeast lees with only intermittent battonage prior to racking and bottling just prior to the ’22 vintage.
