The Artisans of the Barossa is a community of eight small winemakers formed to showcase their commitment to small-batch Barossa winemaking. The alignment of these eight winemakers means consumers can taste over 100 Barossa wines under one roof – an opportunity often unavailable to small wine producers.
Each of these winemakers offers something different to the consumer, so we have decided to showcase one wine producer each week from The Artisans of the Barossa team so you can learn more about them.
The Story behind Chaffey Bros.
This label consists of brothers-in-law Daniel Chaffey Hartwig and Theo Engela – hence the name Chaffey Bros. Wine Co. The brothers-in-law were recently joined by young-gun winemaker Huon Fechner, who has further pushed the boundaries. Hartwig and Engela describe their label as ‘New Wave Barossa’ – showcasing wine’s more aromatic and textual side.
Grapes for the label are sourced from 17 low-yielding sustainable and organic vineyards across the Barossa and Eden Valley. Some of the varieties you can expect from Chaffey Bros. Wine Co. certainly push the boundaries, these unconventional pours adding a layer of mad scientist to their results.
Tactics here involve preserving the purity of the pristine fruit and revelling in the lost art of small-batch blending, so expect the unexpected.
Expect to pour Gewürztraminer, textural whites and some fun red blends, including the ‘Not your Grandma’s* Chillable Red 2021’, a juicy combo of Barossa Grenache and Mourvèdre.
Reasons to love Chaffey Bros. Wine Co.
Not only is their branding super slick and fun, but Chaffey Bros. Wine Co. pours different varieties not commonly found on the conventional tasting list. We love the ‘funky fresh’ style of textural wines from these makers – and the fact that their wines just happen to be vegan-friendly too.
