The Artisans of the Barossa is a community of eight small winemakers formed to showcase their commitment to small-batch Barossa winemaking. The alignment of these eight winemakers means consumers can taste over 100 Barossa wines under one roof – an opportunity often unavailable to small wine producers.
Each of these winemakers offers something different to the consumer, so we have decided to showcase one wine producer each week from The Artisans of the Barossa team so you can learn more about them.
The Story of Spinifex Wines
Spinifex Wines is the collaboration between Peter Schell and Magali Gely, who have residents of the Barossa Valley for over twenty years. Spinifex Wines has a strong French influence due to Magali’s family lineage and upbringing in Southern France.
Over the last ten years, Peter has worked six French vintages in Provence, the Languedoc, Bordeaux and Burgundy, which has further influenced their label and fuelled their passion for making unique, hand-crafted wines.
Grapes are sourced from a group of dedicated growers in Barossa and Eden Valley, which gives the label flexibility regarding what they can produce. You will see varietals not often explored in the Barossa – including the Southern French varietal, Tannat and the Southern Italian varietal, Aglianico. Alongside these grapes, you will find old vine Barossa Valley Mataro, Cinsault, Grenache and Shiraz.
Reasons to love Spinifex Wines
Not only do we love the French influence behind Spinifex Wines, but we are also partial to their Luxe Rose, which has won the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Awards Rose of the Year.
