What to Drink This Winter

As the weather cools and the slow cooker comes out of storage, it's time to start reaching for wines with a little more weight and texture.

The Barossa was built on hearty winter wines. Shiraz is the obvious place to start, but it's far from the only option. Across the Artisans collection you'll find everything from savoury Syrah and old-vine Grenache to textural whites that are right at home on a winter table.

Shiraz for Cold Nights

There's a reason Shiraz has become synonymous with winter drinking. Rich fruit, spice and fine tannins make it a natural partner for braised beef, slow-cooked lamb and anything that spends hours in the oven.

The Artisans winemakers each bring their own approach to the variety. Some lean into power and concentration. Others focus on perfume, structure and restraint. Together, they showcase just how diverse Barossa Shiraz can be.

Don't Overlook Grenache

Grenache has earned a reputation as a summer red, but many of the Barossa's finest examples are equally suited to winter.

Old-vine Grenache offers bright red fruits, baking spice and savoury complexity. It sits beautifully alongside roast pork, duck, mushroom dishes and chargrilled vegetables. The lighter body also makes it a great option for those who enjoy red wine but don't always want the intensity of Shiraz.

Syrah with a Different Perspective

For something a little more refined, look towards Syrah.

These wines often show lifted aromatics, dark berries, spice and a savoury edge, with a finer structure than many traditional Barossa reds. They reward a little time in the glass and pair effortlessly with winter favourites from roast lamb through to game meats.

White Wines Have a Place in Winter Too

Not every winter meal calls for a red wine.

Textural whites with concentration and depth can be every bit as satisfying when the temperature drops. Styles showing citrus, stone fruit, spice and layered texture are ideal alongside roast chicken, creamy pasta dishes and rich seafood preparations.

Many of the whites produced by the Artisans winemakers are built with food firmly in mind, making them an easy addition to the winter dinner table.

A Season Made for Sharing

Winter has always been about gathering around good food and good wine. It's the season for opening something special, lingering a little longer over lunch and finally pulling that bottle from the cellar you've been meaning to try.

The hardest part is deciding where to start.
