Meet the Chef Behind the Kitchen at Artisans of Barossa
At Artisans of Barossa, the experience of wine is inseparable from the experience of food. Located in the heart of the Barossa Valley, our restaurant brings together wines from seven independent winemakers and a seasonal menu designed to complement them. Leading the kitchen is Pyounghwa (Peace) Kim, a chef whose international experience and thoughtful approach to cooking help shape one of the region’s most distinctive Barossa dining experiences.

A Culinary Journey Across Kitchens and Cities
Peace discovered his passion for cooking in hotel kitchens, learning the craft through years of hands on experience in busy professional environments. His early career took him across Australia, where he worked in kitchens from Cairns to Sydney and Adelaide. From grilling during fast paced dinner services to preparing early morning breakfasts and large scale banquets, each role helped refine his technique and build the instincts that shape his cooking today.
While hotel kitchens provided a strong technical foundation, curiosity soon led Peace to explore independent cafés and restaurants where he could develop a more personal style of cooking. Working closely with smaller teams and diners gave him a deeper understanding of what people truly connect with when they sit down for a meal.

Opening His Own Restaurants
That exploration eventually led to his first restaurant, a modern French dining room and bar with subtle Asian influences. Over seven successful years, Peace built a loyal following and a dining room known for its vibrant atmosphere, precise cooking, and memorable dining experiences.
A long standing passion for Japanese cuisine inspired his next venture, a lively izakaya style restaurant that quickly became a favourite with diners. The venue captured the relaxed spirit of Japanese dining while maintaining a strong focus on balance, flavour, and technique. After years of restaurant ownership, Peace stepped away from the demands of running a venue to spend more time with his family before eventually returning to the kitchen with renewed focus.
Bringing Global Technique to the Barossa Table
Today, Peace brings nearly two decades of experience to the kitchen at Artisans of Barossa. His cooking blends classical French technique with the balance and restraint of Japanese cuisine, always guided by a deep respect for seasonal ingredients and thoughtful sourcing.
This philosophy aligns naturally with the Artisans approach to hospitality. Just as each of our winemakers produces wines that express the character of the Barossa Valley, the kitchen creates dishes designed to highlight fresh produce and complement the wines poured at the table.
