John Duval Wines Annexus Mataro 2022

$78.00

Tasting Note

Deep dark in colour, with lifted notes of black cherry, dried herbs and smoky earth. The palate layers black plum, dark chocolate and plush blue fruits, carried along by beautifully defined savoury tannins. A firm yet elegant expression of old vine Mataro.

Viticulture & Winemaking

Sourced from a single dry-grown centenarian vineyard in the Light Pass subdistrict of the Barossa Valley. This site, growing in sandy soils along the banks of the North Para River, delivers intensely flavoured fruit and exceptional structure.

The fruit was fermented in small open-top stainless-steel fermenters with twice daily pump overs for 8 days. Maturation followed for 15 months in fine-grained French oak—15% in new French hogshead, with the balance in seasoned hogsheads and puncheons. Just 250 cases made.

The Story

Barossa has grown Mataro since the 1850s, and the region’s old vine plantings include some of the oldest examples in the world. Longstanding grower relationships give John Duval Wines privileged access to exceptional old vine Mataro, originally used to build complexity into their Plexus Red. The Annexus range showcases these standout parcels in their own right—with this release capturing the best of varietal Mataro from a single vineyard source.
