Spinifex's Revered Black Labels MAGNUMs - three pack | Spinifex Wines

$550.00

These wines collectively embody Spinifex’s artisanal philosophy, emphasizing minimal intervention and site expression. Their inclusion in a limited three-pack offers a showcase of the best from Barossa.

Large-format wines, like magnums, elevate the experience by fostering a sense of occasion. Their size creates an instant visual impact and encourages gatherings, making them perfect for celebrations. Wines in magnum age more gracefully, developing deeper complexities over time, delivering not just a drink but a richer, more layered sensory journey. Opening a large-format bottle signals a moment to savour, connecting people through the shared ritual of pouring and enjoying wine designed for lasting memories.

A very limited amount of magnums were bottled.

The wines of Spinifex, from Peter Schell and Magali Geli, dance a line rarely seen in the Barossa. They dance the line between mid- and full-weight with poise and finesse, all at once full and flavoursome, complex and intriguing, yet never overstepping into a race for plushness or unbridled intensity.

Newly repackaged and adorned black and silver, the outside is as well made as the wine inside. Perfect for your table.

La Maline - Crafty, clever en français

Shiraz: 98%, Viognier: 2%

Returning after skipping 2018, 2019 & 2020, a blend of the Rostein vineyard and an adjacent neighbour. 70 & 20 years of age. Dry grown, skeletal, sandy and granitic soils.

Hand-harvested and fermented wild in open oak and steel fermenters for between 12 and 21 days before pressing, 2021 saw between 30 and 45% whole bunches in the ferments, and two per cent pressed Viognier marc was included in the must. Maturation in French oak barriques and demi-muids (approximately 40% new) on light lees for 20 months prior to assemblage and bottling.

Talk about nailing it. This slots straight into the realms of the glorious. It’s meaty, spicy, jammed with well-ripened fruit and just so well structured; so persistent. Plums and exotic spices, floral lifts, some undergrowth, some game. It feels filigreed; it feels certain. The complexity here, in a silken/seamless context, is right up there.

Good depth and hue of purple-ish colour, the bouquet fresh and minty, indeed a basket of fragrant herbs is there to sniff. The wine is elegant and medium-full-bodied, with softly drying tannins and approachability. A wine of effortless power and style.

Sol Solice - Silica soil en français from the Flaxman Valley, Eden Valley

Inaugural release and will continue as Spinifex's finest Grenache release—a blend of the Rostein vineyard and a vineyard in Light Pass. Three ha of Grenache was planted in Rostein in 2018, managed organically, and the highest Grenache block in South Australia at 490 masl. Light Pass, managed organically, dry grown, 60-year-old vines.

Hand-picked, fully destemmed and naturally fermented in stainless steel and old wood. Fermentation lasted eight days with minimal pump-overs. After pressing, the wine matured in seasoned puncheons and demi-muids for 10 months before it was bottled without fining or filtration.

Grenache sourced from the high elevation of the Eden Valley and the Barossa Valley floor. An offering of the best grenache of the growing season, according to Peter Schell. Plenty of vibrant, aromatic fruit with juicy red plum, cranberry and mulberry fruits sheathed in gingery spice and hints of cola, earth, dried citrus rind, teacake, orange blossom, raspberry coulis and redcurrant paste. Firm, chalky tannin grip and a super lively, mineral-laden wine finishing juicy – just a pure, joyous rendition of the variety. A new wine for the crew from Spinifex and it is glorious drinking.

Fabulously deep, dark and vibrantly red in the glass. Lifted aromas of anise, blackberry, bramble, pastilles, ironstone and graphite, really complex and evocative. Full, plush and decadent on the palate, there's a core of dark fruit, all mulberry, blackberry and dark, pithy cherry, there is also some graphite and licorice at play. The tannins are textured, drying and layered and provide mouth-feel, length and presence. Delicious!

Smells exotic; is exotic. Orange peel and raspberry, cranberry and chalk, floral elements and roasted spice notes. It’s both pretty and substantial, juicy and taut. There’s something ultra pure about this wine; something special. Woodsmoke and earth notes rise as the wine breathes. Apart from many things else, it’s a gorgeous drink.

Indigene Indigenous en français

Old-vine Shiraz (52%) and Mataro (48%) from Ebenezer, Moppa and an elevated eastern Barossa Valley vineyard.

Hand-harvested, cooled overnight and destemmed before naturally fermenting. For the Shiraz component, 30% whole bunches were retained. Natural fermentation took place in small steel and wood fermenters for between 10 and 24 days; then, the wine was pressed into a selection of puncheons and demi-muids (40% new) for 20 months prior to bottling—unfined and without filtration.

An impressive melding of shiraz and mataro in the inimitable Spinifex style. That is to say, an incredibly harmonious and plushly fruited wine with incredible colour to boot. It's all satsuma plum and boysenberry fruits, but with hints of garrigue and exotic spice, blueberry and dried cranberry, a touch of struck flint and purple floral tones. The mataro tannin ramps up on the palate, firm yet ripe and long, and there is sapidity and frame to the acidity. Finishes long with amazingly pure fruit and a gentle wisp of complexing reductive characters and spice.

Rich, full-blooded red wine served on rails of velvet. This is a seriously creamy wine, its saturated plum and blueberry flavours gliding through the palate before finishing with a juicy flourish. There’s fine-grained tannin and quite high acidity, but the fruit and oak characters here flush straight through both. Mint and clove notes are also part of the show, as is smoked cedar. It’s still finding its feet but the stuffing here is excellent.
