Australia’s Barossa region has proven its ability to produce world-class shiraz by winning two coveted ‘Best in Show’ awards at the 2022 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) last night for wines from each of the Barossa’s two valleys; Eden Valley and Barossa Valley.
Even more remarkable is that both awards were received by the one producer, Sons of Eden, for their Romulus old vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019 and Remus old vine Eden Valley Shiraz 2019.
In its 19th year, the 2022 DWWA is judged by top wine experts from across the globe, and is trusted internationally for its rigorous judging process. This year’s expert judging panel included almost 300 international wine experts, including more that 60 Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers.
After a record-breaking year for total wines tasted in 2021, the record was topped again this year with 18,244 wines judged from 54 countries.
Awarded to just 50 wines, this year’s Best in Show winners represent only 0.27% of the total wines tasted, and of the competition's top 50 wines six came from Australia.
Commenting on the competition’s top accolade, Best in Show, Co-Chair Andrew Jefford explained. “By the time a wine comes to be considered for Best in Show it’s already come through its panel as a Gold, it’s come through the second judging week where we find our Platinums. It’s already Gold to Platinum so it’s a super wine. After that we’re looking for a selection of wines that we really believe are outstanding examples of their style, as well as a well-balanced selection.”
The two Best in Show awards follow two Platinum medals from the previous year’s awards further reinforcing Sons of Eden’s expertise as producers of fine wine.
Owned by winemaker, Corey Ryan and viticulturalist, Simon Cowham, the duo have collectively amassed over 50 vintages in the Barossa and are proving themselves to be a formidable team and absolute experts in the region.
“We have long-known the ability of the Barossa to produce world class Shiraz and we are seeing the power of these old treasured vines from both the Eden Valley and Barossa Valley produce outstanding wines”, said Sons of Eden Owners Simon Cowham and Corey Ryan.
“We couldn’t be happier with these results. Awards like these help show the world that Australia, and especially our beloved Barossa, continues to produce excellent wines.” Cowham and Ryan said.
