Congratulations, Artisan Producer, Spinifex Wines! Awarded the highly-esteemed award of Best Rosé in the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Awards.

Owners and operators, Pete Schell and Magali Gely, possess a strong commitment to Barossa winemaking with a deep French connection, both philosophically and physically. It is in Magali’s family tree (or, vine!) that entangles a long line of vignerons throughout the South of France, whilst Pete has completed numerous vintages in Southern France.

Unsurprisingly, Rosé is a style of tremendous importance to Spinifex. Their craft is incredibly reminiscent of Provencal-inspired wines. Pale colours, generous aromatics, and delicious mouthfeels.

Specifically, their Luxe Rosé is only released in optimum years from selected parcels of bush vines. The 2021 is Mataro dominant, a key driver in scrumptious mouthfeel. Cherry and a delicious finish are provided by cinsault whilst the use of Vermentino could be seen as unusual but it’s a true master stroke providing an intriguing white flower and floral note into the aromatic.

"It's been a minute between Luxe releases. Winemaker Pete Schell is a fan of Bandol rosés and the Luxe is a tip of the hat to the rosé styles of the Mediterranean. This year, a blend of 68/26/6% mataro/cinsault/vermentino. Red cherry, watermelon and pomegranate with hints of soft spice, crushed rock, blood orange and wild herbs. Slinky and textural with crisp acidity and a wicked stony, savoury finish." – Dave Brookes
